In an increasingly health-conscious world, pomegranates are being discovered all over again.
For centuries, the pomegranate has been held sacred by many of the world's major religions and revered for its medicinal properties, with different parts of the fruit used to treat a range of conditions.
A small tree native to regions from Iran to the Himalayas in northern India, pomegranates were introduced by Spanish settlers into California in 1769. By 2000, pomegranates were being researched and enjoyed around the world with demand outstripping supply. In 2009, the first commercial crop of Royal Pom™ pomegranates was harvested in Australia and made widely available to Australians for the very first time.
Perfectly round with a distinctive crown shape stem, juicy, ruby-red, Wonderful variety Royal Pom™ pomegranates are about the size of a large orange. Wonderful variety pomegranates are the most widely grown variety in the world, known for their consistently sweet-sharp taste and high fruit colour.
Outside, they have a tough, glossy rind.
Inside, they are filled with hundreds of soft, edible, transparent little seeds encased in sacs of sweet-sharp, delicious juice, known as arils. Pomegranate arils are encased in a cocoon of downy white membrane.
